Research Programme (Ph.D.)


A Ph.D. is a globally recognised postgraduate academic degree awarded by Universities and higher education institutions to a candidate who has submitted to thesis or dissertation, based on extensive and original research qualification. A Ph.D. can be a deep, specific education in a discipline, preceding a postdoctoral period of on-the-job training.

Ph.D. Can be many things: research training, springboard for specialist expertise, rise of passage, job credential. What it means for you depends on which opportunities you seize. Whether you keep an eye on the Big Picture, what sorts of relationships you form and so on.


Candidates who satisfy the conditions mentioned in the existing ordinances viz. O. 5473, O.5474, O.5476 of the University of Mumbai, are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) to be conducted by the University of Mumbai.

Exemption from Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET):

Candidates fulfilling one of the following criteria shall be exempted from Ph.D. entrance test (PET).

Qualified in GATE/SET/NET/JRF Examination / teacher fellowship holder of the apex bodies as CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR/DBT only.

Completed an M.Phil degree from any recognised Universities in India as per the UGC guidelines from time to time.

The exempted candidates from Ph.D. entrance test shall submit their application within fifteen (15)days from the date of notification as per clause 11.1(a) of this VCD directly to the concerned Research Centre with all relevant supporting documents.

Admission Process (Application & Interview):

Candidates who desires to register for the Ph.D. degree and who have passed the entrance test (PET) conducted by the university of Mumbai and who are exempted from the test under clause no.9 of this VCD, shall apply in the prescribed form and submit it along with a demand draft / cash of Rs.100/- to the concerned recognised Research Centre of University of Mumbai within fifteen working (15) days from the date of the declaration of the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) results.

After scrutiny of applications received, the Head of the Research Centre shall invite the eligible candidates for subject-wise interviews by giving 10 days notice after the last date of application. A list of eligible candidates who are also invited for interviews shall be displayed on the notice board.

The Head of the research centre shall constitute subject-wise interview committees to interview the candidates who have passed the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET). The committee shall be constituted as per the guidelines given below. The quorum for the meeting of the committee shall constitute on subject expert, the Research Guide and the Head of the Department. In case of vacancies for reserved candidates, one approved teacher (not below the rank of Reader) form the reserved category of the concerned faculty is mandatory.

  • Principal (Chairman)
  • Two subjects Experts (either from the Department or from the affiliated colleges / industry/ Research Institutes)
  • Head of Department
  • Research Guide/s
  • One approved teacher not below the rank of Reader from the reserved category of the concerned faculty.

Interviews of candidates, who have applied for registration for the Ph.D. programme for the available seats for the subjects in the various faculties at all recongnised research centers, shall be conducted within 30 days from the date of declaration of the results of Ph.D. Entrance Exam

The list of the qualified candidates after interview shall be displayed on the notice board and also communicated to the qualified candidates.

7) Brief Research Profile of Prin. Dr. V.S. Adigal :

Prin. Dr. V.S. Adigal holds degrees of B.A. (Economics), M.A. (Economics) from Shivaji University, Kolhapur & Ph.D (Rural Economics) from Mumbai University.

He started his career as a Lecturer in 1986 with B.E. Society’s S.G.M. College of Commerce & Economics (1986 – 1997), shifted to Kirti College in 1997 and remained till 2008. Along with these two above institutions he remained as a visiting lecturer in the renowned institutions at Mumbai like Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce, Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Management, Government Law College, Hinduja College of Commerce, Jai-hind College, J.M. Patel College of Commerce & Economics, Oriental Institute of Management.

He has attended and contributed as a resource person in a number of conferences/ academic seminars/ workshops at different Universities and colleges. He has undertaken research projects & presented many papers at international, national and/or state level seminars and conferences. He has travelled four countries namely Portugal, Bangkok, Singapore and Sri Lanka to present his research papers. His entire team from India was awarded the medal for “Overall Best Performance in the Conference held at University of Algarve Faro, Portugal hosted by Shefield Hallam University” UK England, organized by Faculty of Economics. He received the honor of chairing the session at Singapore.

He received an award for outstanding Research Papers at International Conference from University of Mumbai. He was also conferred an award for “Best Paper Presentation” at International Conference held at Jaipur. He has been invited as a Key Note Speaker as well as chaired different technical sessions at National and International Conferences.

Three students successfully completed their M.Phil Degree under his Guidance from YCMOU. He is a recognized guide for PhD degree in Business Economics, in University of Mumbai and has been invited as referee for PhD evaluation by other Universities. He has published thirty four research articles in different reputed books, magazines, journals, periodicals at the National and International Level. He remained as Chief Editor for three books published at the National Level by Delhi Publications. In short, he is a fine blend of an academician as well as an able administrator.
